NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called Saturday for calm in Turkey where a coup attempt is taking place, adding he had discussed the situation with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Stoltenberg made a statement on Saturday after holding a phone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"I have just spoken to the Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. I am following events in Turkey closely and with concern. I call for calm and restraint, and full respect for Turkey's democratic institutions and its constitution. Turkey is a valued NATO Ally," Stoltenberg said in a statement.
