Daesh shelled the Syrian army in Syria's province of Raqqa with poison gas ammunition, media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Lebanese Al-Mayadeen broadcaster's Twitter account, the Syrian military came under attack in the western part of province with the terrorists using the nerve agent VX.

The VX nerve agent is an extremely toxic substance used for chemical warfare, and is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations.

In May, the Syrian army launched an offensive in the direction of Tabqa, which lies on the way to the city of Raqqa, the Syrian stronghold of Daesh, outlawed in many countries worldwide, including Russia.

Fierce fighting between Syrian army and Daesh continue in the area 10-20 kilometers [6.2-12.4 miles] from Tabqa.
