Radio Sputnik discussed the importance of the latest gains of the Syrian Army with Dr. Kamel Wazne, founder of the Center of American Strategic Studies in Beirut.

“It is very important and critical at this time because this is the war against terrorism. I think no one is expecting anyone to move ahead but there is a resolve in the Syrian Army that anywhere where there is Daesh, the Syrians have the facility and means to move ahead and take back what has been taken from the Syrian people,” Wazne said.

He further said that it is a message that the Syrian Army and government will not abandon territory even if it’s been while since it has been occupied by Daesh.

Talking about the main problems that the Syrian Army has to deal with, the analyst said, “These terrorist organizations have been supported by countries around Syria and there is still logistic support and ammunition coming from Turkey and other Gulf countries.”

“If regional countries didn’t support terrorists, it would have been a different story,” Wazne said.

He discussed how Russia has been demanding from the US that those countries lending support to terrorist organizations must close their borders and stop moving personnel and ammunition into Syria.

Talking about the recent progress of the Syrian army, Wazne said, “The Syrian army moving to Raqqa is critical and their taking of the city of Tabqa shows that Syrian people are beginning to gain the upper hand in Syria from these terrorist organizations particularly, Daesh.”

Earlier, on Saturday the Syrian army entered the Raqqa province after advancing in a major offensive against Daesh militants.

The troops crossed the administrative border of the province, capturing the strategic town of Zakia, which is an important transportation hub in the region.

Some units of the Syrian army moved by approximately 10 kilometers and are now advancing towards the city of Tabqa, which has a vital military airfield.

In February and March, the Syrian Army made an attempt to carry out an attack on Raqqa. After a series of clashes with militants the attack was suspended and the Syrian Army began its offensive on Palmyra.

The Syrian government has had no presence in Raqqa since August 2014. Liberating the city, where some believe Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is living, has long been seen as key to crippling the terrorist organization.

Raqqa will become a part of the Federal Democratic System of Rojava and Northern Syria following its liberation from Daesh terrorists, a representative of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Iraqi Kurdistan, Gharib Hassou, told RIA Novosti on May 26.
