WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Cook explained that there is a memorandum of understanding that allows for coordination between the United States and Russia to ensure the safety of aircraft operating in Syria.

"In terms of direct coordination of activities on the ground, that is not happening," Cook told reporters when about Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov’s comment that Moscow and Washington exchange information twice daily on the situation in the city of Raqqa.

Furthermore, the US State Department is in touch with its Russian counterparts on the cessation of hostilities agreement, and the Defense Department is advising some of those talks, Cook said.

Earlier on Monday, Syrian military sources stated that the Syrian army had seized several strategic positions on the highway to Raqqa.

Raqqa has been under control of the Islamic State since 2013.

Daesh is a designated terrorist organization that is outlawed in the United Stated and Russia, among numerous other countries.
