BAGHDAD (Sputnik) — Iraqi soldiers on Saturday entered the city of Fallujah, occupied by the militants from the Islamic state (ISIL or Daesh) jihadist group and established control over one of the city's districts, Iraqi army’s information bureau said in a statement obtained by Sputnik.

The Fight for Fallujah: Another Trap for America?
The Iraqi Army and militias, backed by US airstrikes, launched the offensive to retake Fallujah on May 22.

"Fighters from a counterterrorism department broke into Fallujah from southern direction and established control over Nuaimiya district," the statement reads.

According to the statement, Iraqi troops are currently besieging two other districts.

Fallujah is one of the Daesh strongholds in Iraq. It was the first Iraqi city captured by the jihadist group, prohibited in many countries, including Russia, in January 2014.
