Saudi Court Sentences 14 People to Death on Terrorism Charges

A court in Saudi Arabia made decision to sentence 14 people accused of committing terrorist acts to death, other 24 members of terrorist cell were imprisoned to three to 15 years, according to local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced 14 people accused of committing terrorist acts to death, local media reported Wednesday.

According to the Al Arabiya broadcaster, the decision was made by a court in the eastern city of Al Qatif with the predominantly Shia population.

Some 24 members of terrorist cell were imprisoned to three to 15 years by the Riyadh Court, one of the suspects was acquitted.

The suspects were accused of several crimes, including the murder of representatives of law enforcement forces, the destruction of private property, the armed attack on collectors of a bank.

In January 2016, 47 people were executed in Riyadh, including a prominent Shia theologian Nimr Nimr.

Saudi Arabia is said to be among the five countries, where the executions were carried out in the largest numbers over 2015. Other countries include China, Iran, Pakistan and the United States, according to Amnesty International.
