MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday issued a decree for the newly elected parliament to hold its first session on June 6, Assad’s administration said.

"President Assad issued decree №146 with an appeal to the People's Council of the second calling to convene for the first time on Monday, June 6," the president’s administration wrote on Twitter.

Syria held parliamentary elections on April 15 with over 3,500 candidates contesting the 250 seats in Syria's parliament. Ballot stations were set up in 12 of Syria's 14 provinces, as the northern province of Raqqa was still under the control of the Daesh terrorist group and the northwestern Idlib province was controlled by the Nusra Front. Both organizations are outlawed in Russia.
