Afghanistan’s Taliban fundamentalist Islamic group may pick the successor to its killed leader within three days, Pakistani television reported Tuesday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – Without disclosing details about its time or whereabouts, the Urdu-language Dunya News broadcaster said the Taliban had convened the "Shura" council. The channel added that there were many contenders for Taliban leadership to replace Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

Drone Strike Death of Taliban Leader Unlikely to Degrade Afghan Insurgency

Mansour was elected at a previous "Shura" near the western city of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan region, in mid-2015 after Taliban eventually acknowledged his predecessor’s death in 2013.

Quetta and the wider region are suspected of being the hub of the Taliban council’s activities.

Mansour was killed in a US drone strike near the Afghan border in Balochistan on Saturday, officials confirmed.

Despite his death heralded as a significant milestone in defeating the group, experts told Sputnik on Monday that the "multi-headed monster" insurgent movement would suffer only a temporary setback.
