The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) expressed concern on Saturday about demonstrations the day before, when protesters proke into the prime minister's headquarters.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Dozens injuries were reported Friday when Iraqi security forces fired at and deployed tear gas on Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone that houses Prime Minister Haider Abadi’s headquarters and foreign embassies.

"Restoring calm is key for Iraq to be able to move forward in finding a political solution based on inclusive consultations to resume the work of the united parliament to confirm without delay a reformed government that is able and willing to proceed with the reforms that will address the priorities and challenges the country and the people face, first of all fighting Daesh in unity," the UN's Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq Jan Kubis said.

After taking office last year Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that an initial investigation had discovered 55 thousand ghost soldiers in the army - those who were being paid but did not exist, with their salaries instead going into the pockets of officers. - Sputnik International
Protesters Storm Office of Iraqi PM Abadi, At Least 17 Injured - Reports
Demonstrators broke into the headquarters of the prime minister, reportedly prompting Iraqi authorities to announce a curfew in Baghdad.

"Only the enemies of Iraq, Daesh at the forefront, benefit from chaos. We are certain the patriotic Iraqis will not allow this to happen," Kubis stressed in the statement published on UNAMI's Facebook page.

Last month, demonstrators assaulted the Iraqi parliamentary building demanding large-scale reforms and protesting against corruption. The protests are being reportedly led by Shia Cleric Muqtada Sadr with the goal of replacing cabinet ministers in the Abadi government with technocrats.
