"On May 5, at 18:00 Moscow time [15:00 GMT], the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, conducted by People’s Artist of Russia Valery Gergiev, will hold the 'Pray for Palmyra. Music Revives Ancient Ruins' concert on the stage of Palmyra's world-famous amphitheater," the Mariinsky Theatre said in a press release.
On March 27, forces loyal to Damascus and backed by Russian Aerospace Forces, liberated the city of Palmyra from Daesh. The terrorist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia, controlled the city for nearly a year and destroyed part of Palmyra's historic ruins, which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Earlier in April, Russian specialists cleared the historic part of Palmyra of bombs and land mines that had been planted by Daesh militants during their retreat and UNESCO unanimously approved a Russian resolution on the restoration of Palmyra.
The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater, located in Russia's city of Saint Petersburg, has been open since 1860 and has seen premiers of music pieces by renowned composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Gergiev became the theater's chief conductor in 1988.
