MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Terrorist groups in Syria, fighting against Damascus, make attempts to gain control over parts of country's territory, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
"We acknowledge a difficult situation in a number of Syria's settlements, where terrorist groups make attempts to regain control over these or those territories. We are certainly sure that it can not be allowed and it is impossible to stop the struggle against these terrorist organizations," Peskov told reporters.
Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
Kremlin Supports Continuation of Geneva Intra-Syrian Peace Talks
"We certainly support the continuation of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, we believe it is a necessary condition [for the settlement]. The focus on the need to continue this dialogue and the upholding of the ceasefire [in Syria] was established yesterday in a telephone conversation of President Putin with [US] President [Barack] Obama," Peskov told journalists.
A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27. It does not apply to terrorist groups such as Daesh and al-Nusra Front, both outlawed in many countries, including Russia.
