HNC Ready to Ensure Compliance With Syrian Ceasefire
GENEVA (Sputnik) – The Syrian opposition's High Negotiations Committee (HNC) postponed its participation in the latest round of UN-mediated negotiations until progress is achieved in areas including the cessation of hostilities, HNC spokesman Monzer Makhous told Sputnik on Monday.

"This is a temporary stop until there is some progress… There was no progress on all matters. First of all, with regard to the political process itself, particularly forming a so-called supreme body that would manage the political process," Makhous said.

The Saudi-backed opposition group spokesman criticized Damascus’ backing for an expanded government under the leadership of President Bashar Assad.

"It is absolutely unacceptable to use. Therefore, this is a real impasse," Makhous noted, calling for the release of political prisoners and resolving difficulties with humanitarian access.

"Third, with regard to the agreement on the cessation of hostilities, it has been essentially completely broken, to the point where we doubt that this agreement still exists," the spokesman stressed, adding that violations amounted to "real war."
