WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and its allies in the fight against Daesh waged four airstrikes in Syria on Monday and nine airstrikes in Iraq, the US Central Command said in a press release on Tuesday.
“In Syria, coalition military forces conducted four strikes using attack aircraft against ISIL [Daesh] targets. Additionally in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted nine strikes coordinated with and in support of the Government of Iraq,” the release said.
Near the Iraqi town of Hit, two coalition airstrikes struck two Daesh tactical units and destroyed 20 Daesh fighting positions, the release said. Also near Hit, strikes targeted 16 heavy machine guns, four Daesh rocket propelled grenade systems, an anti-air artillery gun, and two staging areas.
In Syria, a single strike near Manbij, and three strikes near Mara hit tactical units, vehicles, fighting positions, a tunnel and an improvised explosive device.
Daesh is a terrorist group that claims to have established an Islamic caliphate on territory under its control in Syria and Iraq, and that has led or inspired attacks in Europe. The group is outlawed in many countries around the world, including the United States and Russia.
