Turkish national Alparaslan Celik suspected of killing a Russian Su-24 pilot in Syria cannot be extradited to Russia, as such a move is prohibited by the Turkish laws, Celik's defense lawyer said Thursday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — Celik was arrested alongside 13 others in the Turkish city of Izmir last Thursday on charges of illegal gun possession.

"I want this issue closed once and for all in Russia: Turkish laws clearly prohibit extradition of a Turkish national to other countries," Murat Ustundag told Sputnik.

However, Ustundag did not rule out the possibility of Russian officials taking part in Celik's trial.

"Russia must first request participation in the Celik's trial in Turkey. If a Turkish court allows Russia's participation, Moscow could submit all documentation related to the case," Ustundag stressed.

The lawyer added that Celik did not shoot at the Russian pilot but merely accepted the responsibility the killing as commander of a militant group.

Turkish Court Lays No Murder Charges Against Alleged Killer of Su-24 Pilot
The Turkish police has no authority to investigate the alleged killing of a Russian Su-24 pilot by Turkish national Alparaslan Celik as the crime took place on the Syrian territory, Celik's defense lawyer said Thursday.

Celik was arrested on March 31 alongside 13 others in the Turkish city of Izmir on charges of illegal gun possession.

"The tragedy occurred in another country — in Syria. Our police has no authority to travel to Syria and search for those guilty of killing the pilot, especially when the war goes on there," Murat Ustundag told Sputnik.

The Russian Su-24 combat plane was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet over Syria on November 24, 2015, and fell four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Turkish border. The crew of the plane ejected and one of its pilots, Oleg Peshkov, was killed by fire from the ground, while the second pilot survived and was later rescued.
