MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Talks on the Syrian peace are expected to restart in Geneva in the coming days. Opposition delegations have been calling on Assad to go before they proceed with discussing the nation’s political future.
"In order for the Syrians to make an independent decision – which is only theirs to make – all necessary conditions should be created," Dmitry Peskov stated.
Asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed that the debate on Assad’s role should be postponed till a later date, his spokesman said that "[Putin’s] stance is based on the firm belief that Assad’s future should be determined by Syrians themselves."
The latest round of proximity talks between the Syrian government and opposition opened on March 14 in Geneva and lasted for ten days. At the end of the talks, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura produced a final paper with points of convergence between the parties.
