Americans should avoid traveling to Iran as the risk of getting detained remains high, US Department of State said in a warning extending the previously issued advice for US tourists in late January.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Relations between Tehran and Washington remain complicated despite recent diplomatic success in reaching a nuclear agreement, or a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"The Department of State warns US citizens of the risks of travel to Iran," the warning said on Monday. "This replaces the Travel Warning for Iran of January 29, 2016, to reiterate and highlight the risk of arrest and detention of US citizens."

Moreover, the US Federal Aviation Administration has also advised US civil aircraft to exercise caution in or near Iran’s airspace, according to the travel warning.

"The US government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and therefore cannot provide protection or routine consular services to US citizens in Iran," the travel warning noted.

In February, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said there is a possibility of restoring normal relations between Tehran and Washington if both sides showed enough political will and undertook steps to build mutual trust.
