A Syrian Air Force MiG-21 jet reportedly has been downed near a military airfield in Hama Governorate.

Syrian Air Force MiG-21 has been downed by armed militants near a military airfield in western Hama Governorate, a military source told Sputnik. One pilot was able to eject to safety, the second one died in a failed emergency landing, according to the source.

"A Syrian warplane MiG-21 was shot down near the Hama military airfield," the source said.

A Syrian military source later explained Sputnik that one pilot of the MiG-21US jet was able to eject to safety while the second one died in a failed emergency landing.

"After the Syrian Air Force plane was hit, one pilot ejected and landed at the al-Magir village, which is controlled by the [government] army. The second pilot attempted an emergency landing at the Hama military airfield. The landing failed and the pilot died," the source explained.

This week, the Hama Governorate has seen clashes between the Syrian government troops and militants from the two main terrorist groups operating in Syria – Islamic State (Daesh) and the al-Qaeda linked Nusra Front.

Neither of the two terrorist groups is part to the ongoing cessation of hostilities in Syria, which was brokered by the United States and Russia two weeks ago. The truce has largely held, despite reports of sporadic violations.

  • Well, we all know who fits that MO.

Sincere condolences to the family and Syria for their tragic loss. These men are all honorable for protecting us all from these monsters who terrorize the world.

Ahrar ash-Sham have released a video showing them firing upon the aircraft and the moment that it was hit - technically not a ceasefire violation though

jas, my thoughts exactly. but video evidence says it was Sham in this case (of cause, Turkish orcs in Syria)

ultravi01et, To me, Erdogan and NATO and the terrorists are all the same team. It doesn't matter to me who actually pulled the trigger. It's all the same team. NATO likes to say that they didn't do this, they only did that, like a child making excuses. But NATO is there saying, "You better not attack our terrorist friends or you'll be fighting us."

My view is that Turkey is running this for NATO. It all leads back to Erdogan and NATO. NATO murdered the Russian pilot and NATO is responsible for this dead pilot and the war crime of his death. Shooting parachuting pilots, disgusting and NATO is right there daring anybody to try and stop it.

I don't play the name game.

Would not surprise me a bit!

jas, this is exactly the point i argued at the very start of the ceasefire, only to have it hushed away.

the fact of the matter is that these groups remain proxies of Turkey and the Saudis whether there is a ceasefire or not; just the other day Kerry described their battlefield gains as 'successes'. NATO's objectives in Syria are superimposed on those of these groups to the extent that they are indistinguishable.

we await the circumstances and consequences of this shootdown - it's not exactly conducive to peace

RIP to the pilot and condolences to his family

jas, you needn't have risen to my comment in the first place anyway. i said 'Turkish orcs' and that and all of its connotations is just what i meant

ultravi01et, We're on the same page on many opinions, I think. I just saw Sham of whoever (I don't even try to know the groups) and wanted to refine my point that NATO is the snake in the pit. Nothing really directed at you although your comment made me want to write a little more about it.

jas, 'NATO is the snake in the pit' - absolutely brother

Some of those old Mig 21's were pulled out of musuem's virtually and were rather dilapidation
a number of since been fully or partially refurbished. Some come from private collections, personally I'm surprised a lot more did not fail.

Initial report was that it was mechanical failure and the pilot was safe? I thought Mig-21 was flown by one pilot?

Irrespective the durability of these 30 year old planes is extraordinary. I wont at this stage offer my condolences as not sure the information is at all correct!

Time Russia get those blades re circulating and go find the culprit's. Send them to cash the virgins that are waiting. Soro's got them waiting somewhere. There Most be a search for what kind of missile did this and an attempt to trace where it came from.
