Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov has called on Turkey to stop shelling Kurdish positions in Syria as it is hampering the intra-Syrian peace negotiations.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The shelling, as well as Turkey allowing arms shipments across the border with Syria, must stop "to provide a more constructive atmosphere for the intra-Syrian talks and a more durable cease-fire," Gatilov said as quoted by Bloomberg on Friday.

Turkey has been shelling the positions of Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria along the Turkish border since February to stop the Kurds from seizing more ground in the area. Ankara considers the YPG to be an ally of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a separatist movement fighting for Kurdish self-determination in southeastern Turkey.

Earlier this month, the Russian military said that Ankara is fully responsible for continuation of hostilities in Syria's Aleppo and Idlib provinces as Turkey ensures a steady supply of weapons to terrorists and keeps shelling groups of Kurdish militia fighting against Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front) radicals.

Syrian Kurds in the northern provinces on the border with Turkey have also been accusing Ankara of keeping the border open for militant groups and supplying them with weapons.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting against numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, including Islamic State (ISIL) and Nusra Front, outlawed in a number of countries worldwide including Russia. Syrian Kurds have been fighting against ISIL, also known as Daesh, for years.

On February 22, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria, which took effect at midnight on February 27.

Talks between the Syrian government and representatives of the country's opposition factions began in Geneva on January 29.

Russia should obilterate turkish forces on the border with massive air power.

Russians know Turks will push the boundaries but quickly withdraw when the Intel suggests they should and smartly! they know they are cowards.

Russians just don't rate them as a military power without full back up from NATO, Russia would bring about a conditional surrender in 2-3 days tops.

ivanwa88, Rasputin likes talking the talk, but doesn't have the balls for this. He couldn't even respond to his downed plane, you think he'll get into a war for Kurds?

Wars have costs apart from the obvious there is the question of financial costs.
Each conflict is measured and budgeted for,so its not just a question of dive in and pay later?

Many other factors come into play such as jeopardising the peace process which has the main priority for now! as I said Turks will push the boundaries till Intel tells them to high-tail it out of there before Russia obliterates them!

They wont stay and fight I can assure you they are just taking advantage of the peace process to get some cheap shots in!!?

sixpack6t9, I was responding to an actual warmonger. Apparently you have no problems with what he said, and disappointed to hear the truth.

nusotnusot, What my problem was, is that you refer to the only man on the planet who is trying to stop the bloodshed in the middle east as "rasputin" and talking like Putin is a coward because he won't go in guns blazing if he can avoid it...it's clear who the warmonger is, and it's not ivan88.

Russia is not in the business of letting them go with diplomacy after military failure. It would not be good business. Russia brought already tens of tactical nukes in Syria. Turkey must not escape with *dimocrasy and fridom for the american wannabees*. One of the main targets is the DISMANTLING of one of the significant members of NATO. Dismantle Turkey before diplomacy. And if they get mad, nuke them into submission. It is a bad precedent, but if you do that very well, think of it, you destroy forever, for all eternity a big portion of NATO, while block the others reaction. In 10 years after that, NATO will be nomore.
