MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting on February 12 resulted in a final communique calling for swift humanitarian access to all besieged areas in Syria, and set a one-week deadline for measures to be implemented toward the cessation of hostilities in the country.
"We have also seen the noose tightening around besieged areas in the last few months, where children are at risk of starvation just a few miles from warehouses of food. The world leaders meeting in Munich said aid deliveries to these areas could begin as early as today, so we will be monitoring closely to see that humanitarian relief consistently reaches everyone who needs it," Misty Buswell said.
Buswell expressed hope that all parties to the Syrian conflict would fulfil their commitments under the ceasefire.
The policy director added that the recent ceasefire deal was an opportunity to keep to the peace process and reach a long-term truce to end the conflict.
"Ultimately, it is only a long-term peace agreement that can finally end the enormous suffering of the last five years," Buswell stressed.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting multiple opposition factions and extremists.
On Monday, Russia and the United States announced an agreement on cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the armed opposition factions had been reached in accordance with the ISSG communique. The ceasefire will come into force on February 27.
