Russian air campaign against terrorists in Syria does not violate international law, Arab League’s Secretary General Nabil Arabi said Monday.

CAIRO (Sputnik) – Russia has been launching airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad since late September 2015. A US-led international coalition has been launching airstrikes against Daesh in Syria since September 2014, without the approval of Damascus or the United Nations.

"We know that Russian forces are in Syria at the request of the government of [Syrian President] Bashar Assad. It is permitted by international law by Article 51 of the UN Charter," Arabi said in an interview to Russian journalists.

Arabi added that he was concerned about reports that Russia had allegedly targeted civilian infrastructure in Syria.

On Monday, the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said that a hospital in the northwestern Syrian city of Maarat Numan, in the Idlib province, was hit by four rockets. It did not say which of the warring parties was suspected to be behind the deadly attack claiming the lives of at least seven people.

However, Turkey and some Western states blamed Russia for the attack. Russian authorities have strongly denied the allegations, calling them "baseless and unacceptable."
