MOSCOW (Sputnik) – More than every 10th Syrian has died and nearly half of the Arab republic’s population has been displaced as the conflict enters its fifth year, the Syrian Center for Policy Research (SCPR) think tank said in a report published Thursday.

"The loss of lives due to the conflict remains the most catastrophic visible and direct impact of the ongoing crisis in Syria, that 11.5 per cent of the population inside Syria were killed or injured due to the armed-conflict," the SCPR said.

Around 3.11 million fled the country as refugees, while 1.17 million Syrians left as economic migrants, according to data contained in the report.

"By the end of 2015, about 45 per cent of the population were dislodged as they left their homes looking for safer places to live or better living conditions elsewhere. Some 6.36 million persons from this population-in-movement continue to live in Syria as IDPs, with many being displaced several times," the report reads.

Poverty rose to 85.2 percent and extreme poverty stood at 69.3 percent by the end of 2015, the think tank's research found.

Life expectancy at birth dropped from 70.5 years to 55.3 years in just half a decade, according to the SCPR.

SCPR describes itself as an independent, non-governmental non-profit think tank with a mission to engage in "open, respectful, and informed dialogue" on key public policy issues.
