Syrian Opposition Demands Ceasefire, Humanitarian Aid Before Talks Continue

Syrian opposition member Qadri Jamil said that suspended intra-Syrian negotiations are expected to resume in two weeks provided a ceasefire is achieved and humanitarian access is granted on the ground.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The suspended intra-Syrian negotiations are expected to resume in two weeks provided a ceasefire is achieved and humanitarian access is granted on the ground, Syrian opposition member Qadri Jamil said Wednesday.

"I think that if the ceasefire and humanitarian assistance issues are resolved, then the talks may resume on February 25," Jamil said at a press conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

Less than a week after announcing the formal start of the peace talks, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura put the negotiations on hold for three weeks last Wednesday.

Jamil said his opposition group, made up of delegates formed after talks in Cairo and Moscow, would offer assistance to de Mistura "in every possible way."

The possibility of a ceasefire is widely anticipated to be addressed at the next International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting between regional and world powers in Munich on Thursday.
