The United States and Turkey are ready to use a military solution against Daesh (Islamic State) in Syria if the Syrian government and various rebel factions fail to find a political solution in the upcoming peace talks in Geneva, according to US Vice President Joe Biden.

In a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara, Biden said that he'd prefer a political solution to the Syrian crisis, but if diplomatic measures won't work then the United States would pursue a military solution.

"We do know it would better if we can reach a political solution but we are prepared… If that's not possible, to have a military to this operation in taking out Daesh," Biden said during a news conference, as cited by Reuters.

After Biden's speech, the White House issued a statement clarifying that when Biden mentioned a military operation in Syria, he was speaking exclusively about the anti-Daesh campaign, not the Syrian government or anyone else.

"The Vice President was making the point that even as we search for a political solution to the broader Syrian civil war, we are simultaneously pursuing a military solution against Daesh. There is no change in US policy," the statement said.

Meanwhile, the intra-Syria peace talks are expected to take place at the end of this month. Initially, the negotiations were set for January 25, but later were postponed for a few days for practical reasons. The much-anticipated talks between the Syrian government and various opposition factions will take place in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Biden and Davutoglu also discussed how the United States and Turkey could support Syrian rebels who are fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

If that's the case then it might be bad news for Washington, as everyone remembers how miserably the US program of training "moderate" Syrian rebels failed not long ago.

At the same time, Washington and Ankara's plan to support Syrian rebels, some of whom in the past joined the ranks of terrorist organizations, such as al-Nusra Front, could mean that the Syrian Civil War would continue.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting opposition factions and militant groups, such as Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

The United States is leading the coalition of over 60 countries conducting airstrikes against the terrorist group both in Syria and Iraq. Russia is conducting its own air campaign in Syria at the request of the Syrian government.

vendor, again you misunderstand me you have to right to change your opinion and to vote for who ever you want but when it comes to war where peoples lives are in question who are we do give the order to start a war just like that are u going to be held responsible for the people who will die there i don't think so that was my point
  • vendorin reply toSkywalker(Show commentHide comment)
Skywalker, OK understood. I take a great pleasure and pride in hand-balling it to someone else as I would not make such a decision myself nor would I ever be ready to take up on the responsibility of such a decision. We leave it to the bad people to make these decisions.

Russia will execute judgement they have off world power backing them, any USA plans will be stopped in their tracks, this is about the warmongering evil elite being defeated and this planet moving into peace. 2016 is a year of great change just look at what has happened in the first 3 weeks of the new year. fasten your seat belts.

vendor, that was just my opinion not to offend anyone but you are right when you say only bad people can do that in this case Biden, Erdogan and Other western leaders who started all this mess in the first place.who will benefit if war starts not the ordinary people but the bankers neocons who run all from behind the curtains and want this war to happen so their plan for NWO or one world government can come true. Russia doesn't want to start a war but to prevent it and i think till now Russia is playing very well i can only hope that this war never happens.

Skywalker, just my opinion, if I may. I think the world leaders must uphold the globally accepted values and laws diplomatically and no matter of the direction (attack or defend) this war is happening already and has not been prevented when all sides should have dropped the military solution as the only solution and in 2012 they should have started the diplomatic process. Yes, Assad wanted it while the Americans said - Assad must go. Evidently this war is a result of the American failed attempts to remove him but we all know that not one person in the US government will ever be charged or tried for this. If Kissinger was never charged for his crimes all of the war crimes after him are almost insignificant in comparison. But do not forget, in any war in any country and under any leadership it takes two sides to fight it and both of them are wrong, even if one side is defending only. There are always ways. One needs to find them especially if they are leaders of their countries. That's my opinion on that subject. :)

vendor, i agree with you and we will see how all this plays out but my hope and support is with Russia and it's leadership as it has proven so far to have the moral high ground. And yes there are always ways to find a peaceful solution if there is a will for that but i don't think that that is possible under the current leadership of the USA. I can just hope that thing wont escalate to a full war no one wants that not even the warmongering America.

Skywalker, It isn't speculation when the US will do whatever is necessary to remain the leading global power.

Pathetic, this is just rhetoric to keep Erdo from folding he's been feed more bullshit from Biden. Sure he believes what he is saying as a preferred option! that's a long way in hell from being a reality. So folks does this talk of Putin being a coward have any real logic ? No there's are lot of projection of fear going on here! without waiting for the response if any from the rest of the world. Biden's thrash talk is typical of moves in this situation knowing full well thats what progressive punters feel is the worst case scenario. He hardly wants Erdoclown to pack his suitcase and flee before the talks start. I'm sure he's probably talking double thrash to Biden like how he will invade Syria if US doesn't show some resolve to support there joint ambitions. Poor fool Erdoclown it is not as simple for US in election year as also the world exposure to there support of terrorism has left them holding a baby in each arm whilst still expected to keep the wolves at bay so to speak. I understand the frustration of the thought evil may prevail over good but I do sometimes wonder about the personality fractures in some of these comments posted. Stay real people there's moon beams to play out yet.

They might talk a military solution, but Russia is not going to be pushed around by anyone.
  • ivanwa88
Obviously Bidens speech is designed to hold the terrorist coalition together to remain at full song for the talks. Whilst used as a veiled warning if Russia and Syria don't fold there's always the option of US sending in Nato. Good luck with that! aren't they forgetting something small and deadly like S400 = Peace on earth from randy invaders especially if you don't want to lose your airforce.

tony p, i agree that is why it is important to outsmart them in their own game

Desire is temporary death is permanent, one can desire the world but will the world come to them on its knees! hardly likely so keep on dreaming your nightmare is just beginning.

I only speed read the article It is vital to affirm the Whitehose reiterated after bidens little war dance that in no way was this directed at Syria or anyone else for that matter except Daesh! Now folks does that settle the storm in a teacup for now. Biden is Biden who is a fool im sure his arse will be very red and sore after he is spoken to.
  • Skywalkerin reply toivanwa88(Show commentHide comment)
ivanwa88, i think the same let him talk the stupid talk but this is far from reality and Biden knows that

Gregoire Trez, Seems like solid thinking to me.
  • jasin reply toivanwa88(Show commentHide comment)
ivanwa88, And we all know we can trust White House statements as being true. *sarcasm* I think Biden said exactly what he was supposed to say and that he was saying Assad is gone one way or another and that NATO refuses to accept anything less than 110% of its objectives..
  • ivanwa88
Jas ok maybe he was given poetic licence however it comes back to the old 'wants and needs' syndrome. NATO's proxy war was faltering anyway before Russia intervened! US did not want to aggravate Americans with boots on ground otherwise they would have been there. Now some 4 months after Russian intervention and Daesh on the run! how does Biden's rhetoric have any substance? its just shear unadulterated Texas bull dust.
  • ivanwa88
Once Russia intervened like it or not Nato's objectives were seriously challenged and restricted any rhetoric from Biden to the contrary is just stirring the pot with silly notions of grandeur.
Sure that's politics! but not as we like it! and not good for votes. Besides anyone heard from Obama lately?
