The differences regarding the implementation of the UN resolution mandating a ceasefire in Yemen have led to the postponement of direct intra-Yemeni negotiations for an indefinite time, the deputy secretary general of General People's Congress, the party of ex-Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, said Wednesday.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — Earlier, the UN press service announced that the intra-Yemeni talks, held under the international organization’s auspices in the Swiss city of Biel, were suspended until January 14.

"The details, ensuring the successful implementation of the UNSC resolution 2216, haven’t been worked out. There were disagreements between the parties regarding their interpretation, and, therefore, the negotiations have been postponed for an indefinite period up to a full elaboration of all points," Faika Sayed told RIA Novosti.

Yemen has been in a military conflict between government forces and an armed Shiite Houthi political opposition faction since 2014.

Since late March, a Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions at the request of Yemeni President-in-exile Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

One of the main goals of the UN-brokered Yemeni talks is the implementation of basic provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2216, stipulating an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of a peaceful political process in Yemen, as well as calling on the Houthis to free government buildings and withdraw their forces from the occupied areas.
