According to AFP, citing police, as many as three foreign tourists were injured when attackers opened fire at the entrance of the resort. The tourists were reportedly Danish and German. One of the gunmen were killed by police and another injured, according to the Associated Press. Al Arabiya reports that one attacker was wearing a suicide belt that has been destroyed by security forces.
While it remains unclear who carried out the attack, Daesh, also known as IS/the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for a similar incident in Egypt on Thursday.
Hurghada is located across the sea from the Sharm El-Sheikh, the resort town where Daesh militants allegedly planted bombs on a Russian passenger plane in October.
