“In Syria, coalition military forces conducted one strike using attack aircraft,” the release stated. “Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 25 strikes coordinated with and in support of the government of Iraq using rocket artillery and attack, bomber, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft against Daesh targets.
The coalition carried an airstrike near the Syrian city of Ayn Isa on January 3, which targeted five Islamic State-held buildings, according to the release.
The coalition also conducted 24 airstrikes near nine Iraqi cities to the north and west of Baghdad, with 12 airstrikes hitting targets near Mosul. The strikes destroyed multiple tactical units and fighting positions, as well as other infrastructure, including bunkers and mortar positions.
“The destruction of ISIL [Islamic State] targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the group's ability to project terror and conduct operations,” the press release said.
The Islamic State, also known as Daesh, is a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and in other countries. It has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate on territories under the rule of Sharia law.
