A high ranking EU official said that European Union cannot participate in the creation of a no-fly zone on the Turkish-Syrian border that Ankara has been discussing.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) The European Union cannot participate in the creation of a no-fly zone on the Turkish-Syrian border that Ankara has been discussing, a high ranking EU official said Wednesday.

“This issue should most likely be discussed with NATO and EU member states that have the resources to participate in such an event. The EU can play a possible role only when a no-fly zone is created and then the EU can only provide humanitarian aid and help refugees,” the official, wishing to remain anonymous, told RIA Novosti.

He added that the creation of a no-fly zone “was not in the EU-Turkish action plan.”

Since 2011, Syria has been mired in a civil war with government forces fighting a number of militant groups and opposition factions.

On October 5, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed the establishment of a no-fly zone and a safe zone in Syria, and to increase the training of and the provision of equipment to the Free Syrian Army as a stopgap measure to stem the high number of Syrian refugees fleeing to Europe.

Last month, US President Barack Obama said imposing a no-fly zone in Syria to improve the humanitarian situation in the region was counterproductive.

One thing is to declare No Fly zone but another is to implement. From the legal point of view it is Syria who has the ultimate rights to declare such zone over its sovereign territory. Beside that there is Russia which is the only legal force flying and fighting terrorists. Everyone else is illegally there and is breaching international law.

Taking in account that Russia has already safeguard against such incredibly stupid Turkish move, by supplying Syria with S-300 and by having own S-400 for own protection. Now knowing that there is really no one with even minuscule brain capacity who would not understand that that would spell disaster in any case. Turkey is driven by Erdogan who is either high on drugs or his brain has been completely removed and filled with Islamic garbage that he believes that his Allah will help him to rule the Middle East.

No matter what, USA are very much aware that Russia means business and that is capable to hit so hard that opponents will eventually succumb to the wounds. Knowing that USA is no longer trigger happy and it is a high time for them to collect their toys and go home let alone to listen to Erdogan's rotten and sour brain.
  • It is like Peru trying to impose a no-fly zone in Nepal.

A conventient ploy for the EU. The EU is, of course, a "monetary union" not a "political entity". However, if the EU profits are threatened, they will quickly become a "military entity" (using NATO, of course).
  • what civil war.. it's obviously not.. it's an international proxy war...
