The kidnapping occurred in the capital of Beirut, according Agence France-Presse, citing a security source, and reports suggest that it may have been carried out by the Lebanese Amal Movement. A senior security official speaking to the Guardian indicated that Gaddafi was being held in the north-eastern city of Baalbek before being collected by the authorities.

Local Al-Jadeed TV aired a video featuring a battered Gaddafi on Friday, in which he asks anyone with information on Imam Moussa al-Sadr to come forward. Al-Sadr is a prominent Shiite cleric who was himself kidnapped in Libya 37 years ago. Lebanon has long blamed Al-Sadr's disappearance on Moammar Gaddafi.
In the video, Gaddafi says he is "in good health, happy and relaxed."
Hannibal was reportedly visiting his wife, Aline Skaf, at the time of the kidnapping.
Hannibal Gaddafi, 40, is the fifth son of the former Libyan leader and his second wife, Safia Farkash. Hannibal fled Libya's capital of Tripoli in 2011, along with other members of the Gaddafi family, after his father's government was overthrown by rebel groups backed by NATO airstrikes.
