WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — One US soldier was killed during a special operation to free some 70 Kurdish hostages in Iraq, local media reported on Thursday.
The US special forces carried out the operation together with the Iraqi counterparts near the town of Hawija in northern Iraq, the New York Times reported.
The death of the soldier is the first US combat fatality during the fight against the Islamic State militants, according to CNN.
