Senior officials including the vice president are said to have emerged from the hotel attack unscathed, while the deposed president Hadi is said to be outside the country. Yemen has been in the midst of an armed conflict after Houthi militias took power in the country's capital, prompting intervention from a Saudi Arabia-led coalition which has escalated into a ground offensive.
The hotel has been used by Hadi's government since its return from exile in Saudi Arabia after Houthi fighters were repelled from Aden by Hadi loyalists supported by the Saudi-led coalition. It is reportedly guarded by troops from the United Arab Emirates.
