ISIL Gains Control Of Several Drug Trafficking Routes From Afghanistan

The Islamic State (ISIL) extremist group has taken control of a number of drug trafficking routes from Afghanistan, Russian envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Thursday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The envoy urged the UN Security Council to closely monitor and respond quickly to developments in the drug situation in Afghanistan, as international terrorist groups use drug trafficking to fund their activities.

A US-led coalition of over 60 nations managed to stop the offensive of Islamic State (ISIL) militants in Syria and Iraq, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director said Sunday. - Sputnik International

"There is information that a group of militants from ISIS [IS] already control a part of the routes of illegal drug supply from the Badakhshan Province [in northeastern Afghanistan]," Churkin said.

ISIL has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq. Militant groups affiliated with ISIL operate in Afghanistan, Libya, Nigeria and Egypt, among other countries.
