MOSCOW (Sputnik) – At least 17 Indians have joined jihadist groups like Islamic State (ISIL) or Jabhat al-Nusra, The Indian Express reported Wednesday citing an intelligence document.
All 17 are young men and have been reported missing, according to the newspaper. A majority are thought to descend from affluent families and none have previous links to terrorism.
Up to a dozen militants from Indian Mujahideen militant group, considered to be terrorist organization by the Indian Government, are believed to have joined the ISIL.
ISIL is a violent extremist militant group, which has seized large territories in Iraq and Syria. It is known for multiple human rights atrocities, recruiting young people from all over the world using social media networks.
Some 20,000 to 30,000 foreign fighters are fighting alongside extremists against government forces in Syria and Iraq, according to various estimates.
