MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, media reports emerged that Abbas and several other high-ranking officials left PLO to pave the way for new officials being elected.
The Jerusalem Post reported later Saturday, citing Erekat, that resignations of this kind were submitted to the PLO’s parliament, the Palestinian National Council, and not the executive.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced in the Israeli media that Abbas could possibly resign, claiming that would reflect growing factionalism in the politics of the Palestinian autonomy and the dissatisfaction by Abbas’s policy. The reports also claimed that Erekat could replace Abbas.
On June 17, Abbas accepted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s resignation and announced plans to dissolve the government. Later, the Executive Committee of the PLO decided to create a commission with all Palestinian fractions to hold consultations on the issue of the formation of a unity government.
