MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Yemeni officials reported the sinking of bulk carrier FOCOMAR near the Sokotra Island in the Gulf of Aden on August 8. The crew, consisting of 24 sailors, reportedly landed on the Samhah Island southwest of Socotra.
"The evacuation was originally planned on August 10 by a Japanese warship based in Bahrain, however, bad weather hampered the rescue operation," the ministry said in a statement.
"The second attempt will be made today, on August 11. The crew is expected to be transported to the port of Salalah in Oman," the statement said.
According to the Russian ministry, all sailors have survived the incident and do not require urgent medical treatment.
Ukrainian and Philippine, in addition to Russian, nationals are thought to be among the sunken vessel’s crew.
The ministry said it was coordinating with the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as its missions in Yemen, Djibouti and Bahrain, to assist the sailors.
