Kurdish Militants Attack Police Department in Southeastern Turkey

Two militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked a police department in the Turkish southeastern city of Yuksekova, Hakkari province, using rocket-propelled grenades, CNN Turk reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) According to the news outlet, two gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at the police building, triggering clashes in the city center.

Owners closed shops in the area where clashes between militants and law enforcement occurred.

No casualties were reported. Police launched a large-scale operation to arrest the attackers.

In late July, Turkey launched a military campaign against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq following two murders of police officers in the southern city of Ceylanpinar. The PKK claimed responsibility for the Ceylanpinar killings, saying the policemen had backed the Islamic State extremist group.
