No Solution to Syria Crisis Without Assad – French Politician
CAIRO (Sputnik) — Political solution to the Syrian crisis could not be achieved until terrorist groups operating in the country are defeated, Syrian President Bashar Assad said Sunday in a televised address to the nation.

The Syrian president added that a critical period of the war in the country has begun when trade-offs are impossible until terrorism is defeated.

At the same time, Assad stressed he supports any political dialogue, even if it has a minimal impact on the resolution of the crisis.

Assad pointed out that third states have recently increased assistance to militant groups fighting Syrian government. The president said he appreciated support Russia and China has been providing Syria with at the UN Security Council.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011 as government forces loyal to President Assad fight several opposition and radical Islamist militant groups, including Nusra Front and Islamic State.

A number of Western countries have long been vocally supportive of what they call "moderate" rebel fighters, while Russia has repeatedly stated that Assad is the legitimate president of Syria, and that the people of Syria must choose their government and leaders without outside intervention.

Estimates on the death toll from the Syrian civil war range from 220,000 to 320,000, according to the United Nations and the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
