A plan to prevent another terrorist attack following Friday's deadly shooting of nearly 40 tourists at a popular beach resort took effect on Monday, the Director General of the National Office of Tunisian Tourism (ONTT) told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova — The gunman, a local student thought to be behind the hotel Imperial Marhaba shooting in the city of Sousse, was shot dead by police after taking the lives of 39 and injuring another 40 holidaymakers, mostly Britons.

"Tunisian authorities set up a committee on the day of the terrorist attack to neutralize new terrorist threats and develop a detailed plan, which began to be implemented, starting today," ONTT's Abdellatif Hamam told Sputnik.

The first stage of the plan, according to Hamam, involves reinforcing security measures with an additional 1,000 police officers and restricting admittance to local beaches and hotels. The second, the so-called "low-tolerance" phase, bans religious communities that sympathize with extremist sentiment and promote terrorism.

As part of the third and final stage of the anti-terror plan, Hamam told Sputnik, 80 mosques that have been identified for having propagated terrorism have been shut down nationwide. Prime Minister Habib Essid said earlier that these mosques would be closed on suspicion of inciting violence.

Security officials said earlier on Monday that seven people, including the suspected gunman's father and three university roommates, have been detained on suspicion of aiding and abetting the suspect to carry out the attack.

The Islamic State extremist group, known for committing human rights atrocities in Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the deadly shooting.
