The head of Egypt's penitentiary department, Hasan Suhagi, refuted on Wednesday earlier reports that Hosni Mubarak, former longstanding president of the country, had been released from custody.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, media reports citing Suhagi suggested that Mubarak had been released from custody after the time he served in pre-trial detention was counted toward his prison sentence.

"There haven't been any orders from the Prosecutor General's office on the situation with Mubarak and his sons. [They] will continue to serve their three-year sentence in custody, unless we receive any new instructions from the prosecutor general," Suhagi was quoted as saying by the Al-Wafd newspaper.

Egyptian Ex-President Mubarak Released From Custody
It is up to the Prosecution General's office and the courts to decide when Mubarak should be release, he added.

Mubarak was arrested in 2011, shortly after he was overthrown in the so-called 2011 Arab Spring protests. In 2012, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his alleged role in the killings of 846 protesters. He spent the following years in prison until he was acquitted of the murder charges in November 2014.

In May 2014, a judge sentenced Mubarak to three years in jail for appropriating over $14 million in public funds, and his sons Gamal and Alaa were each sentenced to four years' imprisonment.

On May 9, a Cairo Court of Appeal upheld the three-year sentence handed down to the 87-year-old politician on corruption charges.
