SANAA (Sputnik) — Militants from al-Qaeda terrorist group seized the southeastern Yemeni port of Ash Shihr on Thursday, a source in local law enforcement told Sputnik.

"Militants of al-Qaeda group took control over the Ash Shihr port in the Hadhramaut province, a few weeks after they captured the city of Al Mukalla," the source said.

In April, the militants reportedly seized the entire coastal line to the east of Al Mukalla, the main sea port and capital of the Hadhramaut governorate, including the city itself.

A terrorist unit known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has been expanding its influence in the south of Yemen, taking advantage of the political instability in the country.

Yemen is currently witnessing fierce clashes between several militant groups, notably between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who was forced to flee the country.

In late March, the situation in the country deteriorated when a Saudi Arabia-led international coalition launched airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen at Hadi's request.
