“The French government is currently studying the resolution project. The Arab Commission with the foreign ministers of six Arab states must come to an agreement with France,” Abbas said.
Abbas added that the success of the initiative would be a complicated procedure and has its obstacles.
“This will be very difficult because the US can use its veto rights [in the UN Security Council]. In any case, the ball is now in US and Israel’s court. If they want peace, then it will be peace on the fundamentals of international legislation, but if they don’t want peace, then this will be their problem,” Abbas said.
The Palestinian leader said he plans to come to Russia to rally support for the initiative and plans to speak with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“I’m going to Moscow in order to find mutual understanding in this issue with Mr. Lavrov and, of course, with President Putin to discuss how Russia could support the resolution project that we are presenting,” Abbas added.
The Palestinian leader is currently visiting Moscow and is expected to meet the Russian president.
Palestinians seek to create a sovereign state on the West Bank territories, including East Jerusalem, marked as its capital, and on the Gaza Strip. Palestine has requested that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories it seized in 1967.
In March, Putin said Moscow would help Palestine achieve its goal of becoming an independent state. Russia is one of the 135 United Nations members that have recognized the State of Palestine.
