As the 14-year US-led war in Afghanistan drew to a close, cases of local security forces members turning on foreign personnel escalated in 2012.
Although security precautions have led to a decrease in insider attacks, the latest incident was the second this year following the murder of three US military contractors by an Afghan soldier in January.
The latest phase of the NATO troop presence in Afghanistan after formal combat operations ended in the closing days of 2014 has left a 10,000-strong contingent engaged in training, advising and assisting Afghan security forces.
