Embassy of Egypt to the United States Political Counselor Alaa Abdalaziz says that the Arab League agreement over the weekend to begin creating a regional military force will give Arab states the means to address regional and international security challenges.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Arab League agreement over the weekend to begin creating a regional military force will give Arab states the means to address regional and international security challenges, Embassy of Egypt to the United States Political Counselor Alaa Abdalaziz told Sputnik.

“This idea, this initiative is in order to allow the Arab countries to have a military tool in order to deal with the security challenges they are facing,” Abdalaziz said on Monday.

The Arab Force is “still an idea,” he noted, which was approved on Sunday by the leaders of the Arab League.

In 30 days, the Arab League’s Secretary General Nabil Al-Arabi will call upon top officials in the member states to convene another meeting. At that time, further details on the Force will be agreed upon, including its size and mandate, Abdalaziz explained.

When the military force is created, it will be open to cooperation with international partners, the Egyptian Embassy representative stated.

"I think the Force, the initiative, will be open for cooperation with all relevant partners like Russia, like the United States, like European countries,” Abdalaziz stated.

“They all have their interests and their presence in the region,” he said, adding that the Force will likely be willing to have cooperation with western powers.

The 22 members of the Arab League met in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt over the weekend and agreed upon a general framework for a unified rapid response force, according to reports from the summit.
