SANAA (Sputnik) French oil and gas company Total has removed top management and a majority of its employees from war-torn Yemen, a source in the company told Sputnik Monday.

“The entire French management team left Yemen and headed to Djibouti on a private plane. Only several engineers from France and Indonesia stayed at the site,” the source said.

Employees remaining at their work places received an order to leave the production site and hand their duties over to a Yemeni party in case the situation worsens, the source added.

French-based multinational oil and gas company Total began operating in Yemen in 1987. More than 1,000 employees assisted in the production of 6.7 million tons of liquefied natural gas a year.

Earlier in the week, several embassies and the United Nations evacuated their employees from Yemen.

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi militants in Yemen since Wednesday when ousted president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi requested assistance from the Arab League.
