Iraq's national museum in Baghdad was reopened ahead of schedule after a video emerged showing Islamic State militants destroying priceless relics in the country’s second largest city of Mosul. It took museum staff more than a decade to recover a third of some 15,000 items looted in the chaos that ensued following the US-led invasion.

"The reopening of the Baghdad Museum is a powerful symbol, coming in the wake of the destruction perpetrated in Mosul,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
