MOSCOW (Sputnik) Three weeks before the general elections in the country, Israeli State Comptroller Joseph Shapira released a report accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government of inefficient policy to control housing costs and housing shortages, Israeli media reported.

The report revealed that between 2008 and 2013, the cost of buying somewhere to live increased by 55 percent, while monthly rents rose by 30 percent.

Likud has accused Shapira of trying to influence the election campaign, but the State Comptroller claimed that the report was not political and that the date of release was set long before the election was called. According to local media, the report may have negative consequences for Likud's rating during the election campaign.

This report is not the first attempt to highlight the current government's inefficiency. On February 17, another report issued by Shapira revealed that the cost of maintenance of Prime Minister Netanyahu's official residence in Jerusalem and his house in northern Israel had increased dramatically between 2009 and 2013.

Netanyahu's ruling center-right party Likud will participate in an early general election on March 17 alongside its main opponent the center-left Zionist Union. In December 2014, Netanyahu declared that he wanted the Parliament to be dissolved and to hold an early election in March 2015, two years before its fixed date.
