Islamic State militants in northern Syria reportedly captured a Canadian-Israeli woman.

MOSCOW, November 30 (Sputnik) — A Canadian-Israeli woman has been reportedly captured by Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Syria, Israeli media reported Sunday.

Gill Rosenberg, 31, who joined the Kurdish militias earlier to fight against Islamic State in northern Syria, can be among several female who have been taken captive recently by IS, Haaretz reported, citing blogs and Islamist websites close to Islamic State.

Canada is now seeking to verify the reports, "pursuing all appropriate channels", Canadian CBC News reported Sunday, quoting a spokesman for the foreign ministry.

Rosenberg emigrated from Canada to Israel in 2006. Earlier in November this year she joined the Kurdish fighters in northern Syria and told Israel Radio in an interview that she had travelled to Iraq and had been training with Kurdish troops to fight against the Islamic State.

Islamic State militant group has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014 it expanded its attacks to northern and western Iraq and declared an Islamic caliphate on the territories that had fallen under its control.

Kurds are one of the ethnic groups in Iraq and Syria that have suffered greatly from Islamic State violence.

A US-led coalition is currently carrying out airstrikes against IS positions in Syria and Iraq. A strategy by US President Barack Obama implies the aid to Kurdish fighters and "moderate" Syrian opposition.
