UNITED NATIONS, November 26 (Sputnik) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern over the escalation of violence in Libya, calling on the conflicting sides in the country to resolve their issues through dialogue.
"The Secretary General is deeply concerned by the recent escalation of violence in Libya, including the air strikes in Tripoli," a statement, released by the United Nations Tuesday, said.
"The Secretary General remains convinced that the only way to resolve the current crisis is through dialogue," the statement added, stressing that all parties to the conflict in Libya must "prevent further escalation", protect civilians and abide by international humanitarian law.
On Tuesday, the Libyan air force carried out two airstrikes on an air base in Tripoli, which is now controlled by a coalition of militias.
Libya is currently facing its worst wave of violence since the 2011 overthrow of its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. The ensuing power vacuum has allowed numerous militias in the country to run rampant.
