Until recently, the Honduran Constitution banned presidents from serving the second term but the country's Supreme Court lifted the constitutional ban on re-election in 2015.

Hernandez has been serving as the president of Honduras since January 2014, with his mandate ending in January 2018.

In June 2009, ex-Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted by the military after he proposed to hold a referendum to rewrite the Constitution.
