Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales on Sunday announced Ivan Velasquez, the head of the UN-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Media reported earlier this week that Guatemala's attorney general and CICIG were seeking to investigate Morales over suspected illicit campaign financing.

"As the president of Guatemala, acting in the interest of people and strengthening the rule of law, I declare Mr. Ivan Velasquez Gomez persona non grata and order him to leave Guatemala immediately," Morales said, as quoted by the Prensa Libre newspaper.

According to media reports, Morales was going to meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on Friday and ask him to replace Velasquez as the CICIG head.
