A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Nicaragua, northwest of the capital Managua, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The earthquake hit at 03:28 GMT on Friday, about 104 kilometers (65 miles) from Managua, USGS said. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

The quake was preceded by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the same area earlier on Friday, about 114 kilometers (70 miles) from Managua, at approximately the same depth.

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0-5.9 are considered to be moderate and can lead to casualties and cause damage to buildings and infrastructure. Magnitude 6.0-6.9 earthquakes are considered strong and can cause moderate damage to even earthquake-resistant structures.
